Still Life for kids- yep, on a NAPKIN!

Still Life for Kids
On a NAPKIN!!!

Materials used:
Viva napkins, still life paper copies for drawing tracing/reference, black sharpies, watercolor paints

As always, I like to experiment on a variety of surfaces to paint with my kids, so in this project, students started by drawing a fruit-bowl/still life on their napkin using a black sharpie.  I facilitated the drawing by providing a paper copy in a sheet protector of the image that I had previously drawn and made copies of.  The napkin is great for tracing any image since it is see through.  I used sturdy plain "Viva" (non-textured) napkins that are sold by the roll.  Once they drew their image, they proceeded to painting it with watercolor paints.  I also explained to them about blending and how subtle the colors can change from one tone to another using plenty of water as they paint.  The resutls were fabulous!

This art lesson is great for teaching about a still life painting, artist Paul Cezanne and color blending

Encourage students to frame their final masterpiece!

I also set up a still life in the classroom so students can see what it can consist of:

Here are some more that we tried with textured napkins (If you are tracing the image, I recommend this with upper grades only because they are not as transparent as the plain ones)
